Understanding business energy
Business energy contracts differ from domestic ones in several important ways. Understanding these differences helps you get more out of the comparison when reviewing available quotes.
- Contract lengths – business energy contracts typically run for one to five years, with prices fixed for the duration.
- Out-of-contract rates – if you don’t arrange a new contract before your current one expires, you’ll move onto out-of-contract rates, which are generally more expensive.
- Meter types – your meter profile (standard, half-hourly, or multi-site) affects which tariffs are available and how your usage is measured.
- No cooling-off period – unlike domestic contracts, business energy agreements usually cannot be cancelled once signed.
What UK businesses pay for energy: the official figures
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero publishes the average price non-domestic customers actually paid each quarter, split by annual consumption. In the first quarter of 2026 (provisional) the averages were 24.14p per kWh for electricity and 5.17p per kWh for gas, including the Climate Change Levy and excluding VAT. Both are lower than a year earlier (25.74p and 5.54p). The smallest sites pay the most per unit: under 20,000 kWh of electricity a year averaged 35.02p, and under 278,000 kWh of gas averaged 7.48p.
